What is the Best Premature Ejaculation Treatment?
The real question should be what is the best premature ejaculation treatment for you!
Premature Ejaculation Treatment Type
If you take a look at our premature ejaculation treatment page, you’ll see four different type of Treatment.
Each one of those treatment has their pro and cons, and you can read more on each by clicking the links above. If you want to find which one is the best for you, there are different criteria to take into account.
Ease of Implementation
Not all treatments are easy to try.
Self-Therapy is without a doubt the easier one. While it demands a certain level of commitment, you can try it alone at home as soon as today.
For a professional sex therapy, you need to find a competent and certified sex therapist. Also, it requires a bit more motivation on your part since you have to be open to talk about your premature ejaculation problem to someone you do not know.
Delay products are easy to try since they are available over-the-counter in most countries. They are easy to find both online and in physical stores. However, the use of certain of those products is often a couple decision since you may have to interrupt the “action” to apply the product.
Premature Ejaculation Drugs are probably the harder to implement since you need a prescription to use premature ejaculation drugs. To get this prescription, you need to see a doctor and he’s the one that will decide if you need this treatment or not.
Cost
Self-Therapy is without a doubt the cheapest treatment. You can do it for free if you want.
Professional sex therapy is the most expensive one (at least in the short-term). A certified sex therapist could be really costly. The price varies from one country to another. In Canada, one session is often more than 100$CAD, and a complete therapy is rarely less than 6 or 7 sessions. It can even be more. If you make the math, you’ll realize that a professional sex therapy could cost up to 1,000$. However, some health insurance could cover the therapist fee (in full or in part).
Delay products aren’t costly (from 1$ to 4$ per dose). Still, you have to pay each time you are using the product. So, if you calculate all the time you have sex in a year, it could quickly become expensive.
Premature Ejaculation Drugs prices depend on the drug type and your country. On-demand drugs that are available in certain European countries could be really expensive. For Example, Priligy, an on-demand PE drug can cost from 6€ to 9€ per dose in France. Other off-label drugs could be included in certain public or private health insurance plans.
Effectiveness
While all treatments have shown some success, it could be hard to compare each one because of methodology difference. You could read more on each treatment effectiveness on their respective page. In short, drugs probably has the most significant effect on ejaculation delay, followed by delay products, professional sex therapy, and finally self-therapy. Still, as mentioned, it is hard to compare each treatment effectiveness because studies that prove their effectiveness do not all have the same methodology. In general, drugs studies have better funding and can, therefore, spend more on robust studies.
Health Risk
The last criteria you should evaluate is the health risk. While both self-therapy and professional sex therapy are purely psychological/behavioral treatment, the risk is close to zero.
Delay products are topical agents. They are a form of drug that you apply locally on the skin. While they can present some side effects, they are made from substances that are available over-the-counter in most countries.
On the other side, Premature Ejaculation Drugs are mostly antidepressant that could have more severe side effects. Contrary to the delay products, they alter your brain and entire nervous system chemistry. They require a prescription by a physician, and he’s the one that will be able to explain the real risk the drugs can have on your health.
The Best Premature Ejaculation Treatment is a Combined Approach
Because Premature Ejaculation is a complex condition with multiple causes, often, one treatment alone won’t be enough. For example, if a self-therapy can help you learn how to control your psychological arousal, it still won’t be enough if your PE has deep neurologic causes. On the other hand, a drug treatment could compensate for the neurologic aspect of your PE, but the lack of therapy would still make you ejaculate quickly because you won’t have learned how to control your arousal.
That’s why the best premature ejaculation treatment is often a combined approach. That doesn’t mean you have to try all at the same time. Personally, I would recommend starting with the less implicating first.
That’s why I recommend a combination of self-therapy with premature ejaculation products. If you are still unsatisfied with this, then professional sex therapy and drug treatment could be interesting options to investigate.
